We serve a big God! He parted the Red Sea, walked on water, wrote on walls, created the world, made the Sun go backwards, and descended in tongues of fire on his people.

Wow.

Those stories are way cool, aren’t they? They invoke awe in me, the open-mouthed reader, and make me realize that there’s nothing God cannot do.

They are all BIG stories. Powerful miracles. Crazy things that I can barely imagine happening before my eyes. (Seriously. Can you imagine being an Israeli and walking through a literal ocean???)

If you’re like me, you’ll see all these big things God does and feel very small, maybe even a little left out. Does God see me? Is he too busy making the sun stand still to listen to my prayer about my big day tomorrow? God has too many important things to do. He doesn’t really have to help me remember my sales pitch at my new job, does he? He doesn’t have to make sure I get the Green Ember series for Christmas. He’s got other things going on. I probably shouldn’t bother him.

I just won’t ask at all.

Perhaps your thoughts have meandered down a similar path before. Maybe you’ve decided that you’re only going to come to God with the really huge, important things because there’s so much else that he has to get done. Like making sure missiles disappear in the middle of the sky above Ukraine, and blinding soldiers’ eyes to the hundreds of illegal Bibles stashed in the car they’re searching.

I can relate. I’ve thought the same before. But I know better now. 

May I offer you a hug? A word of encouragement, and a reminder about just how big our God is?

Let’s take this concept to its logical conclusion. If our God is really a big God, then he is capable of doing all of it at the same time! He’s so big he can make rockets disappear and help you remember that frustrating formula and answer your sister’s prayer for a best friend and your third cousin’s neighbor’s uncle’s prayer for a new job and a random stranger’s prayer to have a purpose in life, all in the same millisecond!

Don’t be afraid to ask God about anything and everything. James 4:2 says, “You do not have, because you do not ask” (ESV). Jesus says, “Ask, and it will be given to you” (Matthew 7:7). In another context he says, “If it were not so, would I have told you?” (John 14:2) This proves that we can trust his word. If he says we can ask and he’ll respond, he means it.

Not only is he capable of seeing to all our needs, but he also wants to! He told the people of Israel, “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:12-13). God promises to hear you.

So go ahead and ask him. After all, he’s a big God. He “…is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20). How awesome is that?
