Who’s your favorite singer or songwriter?
For me, one of my favorite music artists is Brandon Lake, who is pretty well known in the Christian community for his songs Gratitude, House of Miracles, and Just Like Heaven. He’s collaborated with Bethel Music and Elevation Worship, but he puts out his own music as well.
Today I want to share with you one of my favorite songs by Brandon Lake — Miracle Child.
I can see a lot of influences from Ephesians in this song, and I’ve now realized that since Ephesians is one of my favorite books of the Bible, that probably contributes to my love for this song! If you want to read more about how God has made us alive in Christ and made us into new people, you should read this epistle. But onto the song!
The phrase “miracle child” is usually applied to infants who were born very prematurely and miraculously survived, or to babies who miraculously lived after suffering intense medical issues. Brandon himself said that the song’s title is especially meaningful to him because his mother had 6 miscarriages before he was born.
But that’s not the only way “miracle child” can be used.
Lake specifically applied those words to us as born-again Christians, writing,
“I am resurrected, blood-protected, I am a miracle child.”
When we became followers of Christ, God resurrected us from spiritual death and “made us alive together with Christ” as His adopted children (Ephesians 2:1-6). We who were once very far from and completely without Christ are now brought near to God by the blood of Jesus (Ephesians 2:11-13). As Lake sings,
“I shouldn’t be alive, my future was six feet under. One foot in the grave, no hope to be saved, I shouldn’t be alive”
If it were not for Christ showing His love to us by dying for us, we truly would have no other hope or ability to be saved!
As we are spiritually dead before coming to Christ, we cannot make ourselves alive on our own. The only thing that can change us is being ‘made alive’ by Someone who is already alive. As God is the only Being in the universe who is eternal and the one source of spiritual life, He is the only one who can revive us!
Just as Brandon writes in this incredibly encouraging song, God has paid the price for our sin and brings life to all those who come to Him seeking forgiveness. Instead of making us pay the awful penalty for our sin against a holy and perfect Creator, Jesus Himself suffered an excruciating crucifixion in order to save those who would believe in Him.
“He shouldn’t be alive, His body was six feet under. Three days in the grave, that stone rolled away, our God is alive.”
Like the song says, Jesus truly is the ‘living, breathing God of glory’ and ‘the One who turns a dead end story to a living, breathing testimony’!
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich” — 2 Corinthians 8:9
Jesus did not seek to preserve His own safety or comfort when He saved us, and we have
eternal life, joy and peace as a result of His supernatural love for us. He endured horrible pain and suffering to bring us into His family, so that we could be called His brethren (Hebrews 2:11-12), and so that we might enjoy the riches of His grace. We are all miracle children in Christ!
“I’ve been crucified, raised with Christ, I am a miracle child.”
