What’s your favorite nursery rhyme or children’s song? Maybe it’s the classic Wheels on the Bus, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, or simply the ABC’s. But whichever you like best, I’d guess that it’s a silly song, not one that has a whole lot of depth of meaning to it. That’s the point of nursery rhymes — they help you learn your ABC’s or memorize your times tables, and then you’re done.
However, there’s one children’s song that we should never forget or label as childish. That children’s song goes like this:
“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong, they are weak but He is strong.”
I came back to this song after hearing Lydia Laird’s This I Know (Jesus Loves Me) on my local Christian radio station. Her song really deserves a post of its own, and if you’ve never heard it before I’d recommend listening to it, but right now I want to dwell on the original Sunday School song.
The words of this song hold such an important principle for us as Christians, which is that we should hold on to the promises God gives us in the Bible! How do we know that Jesus loves us? By the fact that the Bible tells us so. This simple, child-like idea of “God said it, so I’m going to believe that it’s true” is something we can never outgrow in our walk with God.
We have to believe that our lives are governed by what the Bible says, not by what we feel is true or what everybody else tells us is right. That principle applies to recognizing sinful actions and thinking in our lives, as well as believing God’s encouraging, loving promises with all our hearts.
How do we know that Jesus has every aspect of our lives under control? The Bible tells us so.
How do we know that God is unchangeably, incredibly good? The Bible tells us so.
How do we know that God always hears our prayers when it feels like they’re hitting the ceiling? For the Bible tells us so.
When the Bible tells you that as a believer, God chose for you to be brought out of darkness into His glorious light, then believe that you are now a chosen member of His kingdom! When you read that Jesus paid for all your sins and made you righteous before God for all of eternity, have faith! When the Scriptures say to you that Christ keeps us under His holy protection for the entirety of our lives, BELIEVE THE CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE!
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” — 1 Peter 2:9
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence.” — Ephesians 1:7-8
It doesn’t matter if you feel like the biggest failure on this earth, it doesn’t matter if people have treated you like you’re inadequate or incapable, and it doesn’t matter how far away Jesus feels.
If you are a Christian, a redeemed child of God, then all of those those thoughts belong in the trash!
Stop listening to the voices that tell you God has given up on you, that there never was a God to believe in, or that you’re too weak to be used by Jesus. Christ is the only one who gets to define your life, since He’s the one who is your Creator, Sustainer and Redeemer.
If He was willing to die on a cross to redeem you from eternal punishment, I’d say you have great worth in Christ!
If Jesus gave us His Holy Spirit to you, and both He and the Father have made Their home inside of you (John 14:23), don’t you ever believe that you’re “not half good enough”!
Jesus loves us, this we know, for the Bible tells us so.
